Chinese theatre (戏曲, Xiqu in Chinese Pinyin), also known as Chinese operas, encompasses a family of hundreds of opera forms that have evolved from various local cultures across China over the centuries. Each opera uniquely combines music, singing, mime, dancing, acrobatics, and dramatic performance. According to a 2015 survey, 348 distinct Chinese theatre operas are extant in China, with Beijing opera, Kunqu opera, Yu opera, and many others remaining widely popular among the people.
